Just a suspicion, but I think Bernard may be thinking of 
/proc/sys/kernel/hostname, which does show zero length, but when displayed, 
contains the host name.  I think Ryan (and I) were looking at the program 
/bin/hostname, which on my machine is 15464 bytes.
