Provided something will spread your data over the devices (e.g. LVM
with striping) then it's mainly a matter of how many devices you have.
If you server just has 2 disks, and 8 chpids to your disk subsystem,
you could imagine your server being held back because of 2
subchannels. But if you have 10 disks then having 30 subchannels on 8
chpids will not be much better than 10 subchannels.
When possible you should avoid having all disks of the server on a
single "drawer" (or whatever the units in your subsystem are that
share some of the logic inside the box). Typically that means avoiding
using a range of consecutive real device numbers for a single server.
That seems to have a much bigger impact.
