The Linux images that I will be using will be database servers so I don't see putting more than one Linux server on the same 3390-9. Do you think there will be any major performance issues with using the 3390-9 as compared to the 3390-3, or is it neglegable since I will be using several 3390-9 for the servers?
Provided something will spread your data over the devices (e.g. LVM with striping) then it's mainly a matter of how many devices you have. If you server just has 2 disks, and 8 chpids to your disk subsystem, you could imagine your server being held back because of 2 subchannels. But if you have 10 disks then having 30 subchannels on 8 chpids will not be much better than 10 subchannels. When possible you should avoid having all disks of the server on a single "drawer" (or whatever the units in your subsystem are that share some of the logic inside the box). Typically that means avoiding using a range of consecutive real device numbers for a single server. That seems to have a much bigger impact.
