First we run linux under z/vm and we b/u the vols using dfdss from mvs. The
root vol is a full mdisk.
Yesterday our production(well what will be production ) server got wiped out.
I'm not goint ot point fingers but it wasn't me. Anyway found that our b/u
isn't working the way we thought so I had to rebuild (with help of a good
friend) by hand. What had happend was someone, again not me, MOVED a bunch of
files from where they were suppose to be. I moved them back . We were able to
logon and function but we have a few small problems. It appears that /var/log
isn't there. There is a /var and a /log but not a /var/log. This caused a
problem with yast not being able to get to the yast logfile but
the more pressing problem is we can't ftp into the box in fact I can't ftp
into the box form itself. I get connection refused. I can ftp out and so it
appears the client sid of ftp is cool but the server side is hosed. Could this
be caused by the lack of a "log" file?

  thanks
  Mace
