Rich,
No my restore wouldn't work. I have a problem open with IBM on it. We use
dfdss from mvs to b/u the files using cpvolume and admin. What happen with the
help of a mutual aqutaince was find where the files had been moved and put them
back. But I'm haveing this(ftp) problem and a problem with /var/log. There is a
/var and a /log BUT no /var/log and yast is pretty upset about that.
Anyway there is no ftp listening on the server. Could this be a problem with
no /var/log?? Call me whne you get this I'd like to talk to you about something
for a moment.
  thanks
  Larry

How did you rebuild? Some sort of restore? ...reinstall?

If you get connection refused from an FTP attempt, it is possible that the FTP
daemon isn't start (or isn't even installed). From root, issue 'netstat -l'
look for FTP as a listener. It shoud look like this:

tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN
