Just playing Devil's Advocate here.......

No one has mentioned that Virtualization (i.e. z/VM) is no longer limited (or 
costly) on Intel. Big Intel servers can now be virtualized using software such 
as:
OpenVZ - see http://www.openvz.org
Xen - see http://www.xensource.com
UML - see http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net
and yes of course even:
VMWARE - see http://www.vmware.com

Note that IBM is even funding virtualization projects, with a view to not only 
better Intel support, but support for its POWER platforms as well.

Wouldn't it be interesting to compare z9 + z/VM + z/Linux to a virtualized 
Intel (or POWER) configuration?
