For my SLES9 systems, I use 'SIGNAL SHUTDOWN FOR userx WITHIN 120' to bring the servers down. For my older TurboLinux systems, I use SCIF to enter a 'SHUTDOWN -H NOW' command at the server's virtual console. Once all the Linus systems are down, I run the backups and use XAUTOLOG to initiate each server when the backups are complete.
