Remember our discussion of live backups? Live sharing is another facet of the same issues. To really *share* requires the consent and cooperation of the participants, even if that's as simple as the passive "I cross my heart and hope to die: I will not change the disk while you have it mounted". But as you notice, just because you *can* do a thing doesn't mean you *should* do it. Sharing a file system requires a great deal of analysis. Not all applications follow the conventions on where to put config files, customizable scripts, and executable code. That really is the nice thing about unionfs - you don't care. Of course, things like unionfs just introduce another element to be managed. E.g. backup considerations.
