Please specify, Chuck, if you were using /dev/dasdx1 or tried just the /dev/dasdx form of the device name. The latter should work withOUT requiring a partition table. It will, however, require that the disk be blocked. Format each disk from CMS to get the 4K blocks you'll need. Of course, if you use the "1" device filename, then you're talking about "partition one" for which you will need a partition table. Now ... if you need an IBM label, then you have to use either LDL or CDL. Non-partitioned disks will usually wipe out an IBM label as many of the filesystems get too close to the start of their space (partitioned or not). So when they're in a non-partitioned volume, they step-on your IBM labels. If z/VM is in the mix, then you may very well not need IBM labels on the disks, since your Linux disks often will not start at physical cylinder zero. And if you don't need IBM labels, then you don't need a partition table unless there are other reasons for having Linux slice-up the disks. -- R; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
