Where is the DHCP server? If it is not on the same Layer-2 broadcast
domain (think subnet or VLAN) as the DHCP clients (the systems
requesting their IP addresses to be assigned), special configurations
are required in the the network routers to forward the request to the
actual DHCP server. (Translation, your network people will need to get
involved for that.) DHCP is dependent upon broadcasts being delivered
to all devices on the broadcast domain to achieve delivery of the
request to the DHCP server or forwarding router on that broadcast domain
(again, think subnet or VLAN). If the DHCP server(s) is/are external to
the mainframe, the broadcasts must reach the external routers which
requires the frames to contain MAC addresses (Layer-2 addressing).
Correspondingly, for the response that contains the DHCP client's
assigned IP address to actually reach the Linux guest, requires the
guest's MAC address to be present in the response frame. Layer-2 and
where the clients and server(s) reside in relation to each other matters.

Lee, I *think* DHCP needs to be able use/access the layer 2 (maybe layer
3) facilities of the VSWITCH, which means that it needs to be
TYPE=ETHERNET.
I'm sure Dr Boyes can explain it much better than I....

Hi... I'm trying to set up a DHCP server on Z, under VM, via a Vswitch
to an OSA... It's all installed and configed and started (cleanly),
but... It never seems to get a request, and clients time out..
Has anyone done (or tried) it before?
Thanks,
Lee
