My fault.  Should have read the manual (preparation.pdf). Fix was to
stop using Microsoft's ftp server and download a third party ftp server
per the manual's suggestion.  Once I pointed the install to the new ftp
server things started to click.

What you're seeing is the new SLES 10 install procedure.  Just select
option
4 to begin the install.  Section 2.5 of the Architecture-Specific
Information manual (preparation.pdf) describes the new process.
