As Adam points out, stay away from UDP if you can. And you want to make sure it's not your end that is the bottleneck. A sustained rate of 1 MB/s should be possible, but writing to disk takes a lot of smoke and there is enough room for surprises. At least check that the virtual machine is not CPU constrained or suffering from paging.
