As Adam points out, stay away from UDP if you can.
And you want to make sure it's not your end that is the bottleneck. A
sustained rate of 1 MB/s should be possible, but writing to disk takes
a lot of smoke and there is enough room for surprises. At least check
that the virtual machine is not CPU constrained or suffering from
paging.
I'm confounded!!
From my laptop, when I had SUSE 10 on it, I could copy large files (DVD
images Gbytes in size) _over the air_ (11g) at around 3.2 Mbytes/sec/
On the 100 Mb wire, I regularly get 8 Mbytes/sec.
I'm using scp, not NFS.
I really don't see why you aren't getting way better than those figures,
I thought that was the whole point of expensive gear.
