As Adam points out, stay away from UDP if you can.
And you want to make sure it's not your end that is the bottleneck. A
sustained rate of 1 MB/s should be possible, but writing to disk takes
a lot of smoke and there is enough room for surprises. At least check
that the virtual machine is not CPU constrained or suffering from
paging.
Um.
I hope you're wrong about that sustained rate. Because 4 GB/hr is
already slightly greater than 1 MB/s. Surely substantially better is
possible.
I'm sure that's a rounding/truncation error; it's what I got when I did
the conversion in bash which, while it's a rough calculator, is pretty
handy as I always have several shells at my fingertips.
