Is there a way to let zVM know that this is a password field similar to when you are logging on to zVM or using the VM-FTP Client?
IMHO if you change /etc/inittab to automatically logon root on the console, the issue is gone. There is no way people could see the root password because it is not typed. The console is protected by the same controls you have to manage access to the VM userid so it does not lower the barrier. You can also take advantage of logonby to avoid a shared password for the servers. For normal operation you should be able to do without logging on to the guest. If you spool the console you could use TRACK to check the last msgs on the console without logging on. The only real case is imho when you lost the network or when the server does not boot. In that case you can do without the trouble of finding a valid root password. And if you care about security, you should really get rid of passwords completely and use cryptic keys instead.
