John,

Then interpret the guidelines for IA32:-)
The real memory requirement is a function of word size (64-bit
instruction sets may impact on code size, 64-bit word size may have
implications for data structure sizes, the greater addressing range may
have implications for sizes of work areas, buffers etc), and then there
are the sizes of the instructions in different architectures...
Linux on S/390 specific install guide (at least I haven't been able to
find one), so I am making do with the 'generic' Unix install guide.
I have a 3390-3 dedicated to Swap, so I have 2.5G +/- backing my 600M
real.
If you can't run it in that....
But, I don't think it's a memory issue at all.
So, at the moment, I am not sure what's going on.
Also, I have reference to two patches for Oracle 9i for Linux on S390,
but working with the Oracle DBA's here, we haven't been able to locate

them. They are p3287374_220_LINUX-S390.zip and
Oracle-9i-p3501955_9205_LINUX-S390.zip. Per a paper sent to me by
dot-zip?
another user (thanks John!), it appears that the first patch, p3287374,
is a patch to the Oracle Universal Installer. I don't know if that may
be related to the problem. Anyone know where I might be able to find
the patches? So far, we have come up empty searching the Oracle Patch
site(s).
Reminds me of the time we were playing with VS1 on our 3168. It was
giving grief and a couple of IBM PSRs decided to attend one Saturday.
They stood around, saying "Very interesting," and little else!
I suggest running the installer under strace (if you can't get a core
dump), trace everything to a file and sending them off with the trace on
a tape (or other transportable media) and telling them to "come back
when they have a fix."
Thanks,
Dave

Mark,
If it is, in fact, a memory issue, then I'm probably done with it.
I
have @600M available in the LPAR (no VM), and that's as much as I

give it. This box only has 2G, allocated across 5 LPARs.

Don't confuse real memory with virtual. You can add swap way beyond
your
real memory, and there's no particular reason you can't back you 600
Mbytes or so of real memory with 2 Gbytes and more of swap.
Performance may suffer, but that's another issue.
FWIW, what does Oracle say are the requirements? Since there's no VM
involved, I guess the guidelines for AMD-64 (Opterons) would be the
ones
to follow.
Thanks,

"Typically" in my experience a segmentation fault is caused by
serious
lack
of memory. Our Oracle installed complained that it need over 900MB
for
the
install.
