Forgot to add You don't really need much swap space with Oracle. Most of Oracle runs in the SGA (system global area), simular to the database cache, amoung other things. So you wouldn't define a SGA large enough for you to do active swapping. That would be dumb. Either make the machine bigger or the SGA smaller. Of course, if you don't tune, and the SGA causes you to swap, you will swap a lot and have poor database performance. (Linux will swap out based on LRU, and Oracle will reuse it's LRU pages for new cache...about the worse thing you could do<G>))
I have 3 vdisks setup for swap. 292 is 81920 blocks 293 is double 292 294 is double 293 with different swap priorities so 292 is used first, and if needed 293, and if needed 294. The only time I see some swaping is when OEM is doing some "utility" thing. Such as a backup or some other "batch" OEM type job. Normally they wouldn't be scheduled during your peak periods, so some swapping is better then holding on to the real storage 24 X 7. Tom Duerbusch THD Consulting >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1/2/2007 2:34 PM >>> Hi A group is wanting to install Oracle 10g and is asking for a server with 3Gb Memory and swap at 1.5x the memory This sounds like an Intel install but is out of the Linux for zSeries install guide. What have you seen as to what is really needed to install and run oracle? Do I really need a server that large and with that much swap space?
