I've used most, if not all of the commands listed in the article on z/OS
USS and z/series Linux.

The following command;

{ mkdir -p $HOME/tmp3/sub1/sub1_a ; }

will work under USS or z/Linux and most UNIX shells. 

If the curly braces "{}" are not working make sure you are using the
correct codepage for your USS session (telnet or 3270 emulator); ISO
Latin-1 (CP1047) should be the codepage and environment variable
LANG="C" should be set... 

For what it's worth most of the tips in that article are somewhat useful
but I would not call them "bad" habits... Just simpler... It is still an
interesting article.
