Yeah, if someone cared enough about those languages, it would be
possible in Vim as well. Frankly, all the editors are pretty much the
same.

I guess I need to learn how joe does syntax highlighting and such, just to
disprove this contention.

(joe, BTW, is worth a look, especially if your fingers are like mine and do
WordStar-style (also known as Borland-style) key sequences automatically,
without thought.)
