Actually migrating unused files should be possible on UNIX-like OSes via the
dmapi extensions. As far as I know, dmapi was included in JFS and XFS on
SLES9.
But I have to admit that I dont know the status of dmapi in SLES10, nor do I
know if these features are considered stable or experimental in SLES9.

If you create a mount point using zOS NFS and want to migrate the
entire content to HSM, it works. I tested it. It gets recalled.
However, I simple "ls" will start recalling. SO, it was not a
workable solution.
We have experimented with several Unix based HSM products but have run
into problems with Windows based file systems (a simple virus scan on
either Windows or Unix file system reset your flags).
We ended up getting a Clariion file system via Fiber to the SAN for files.
We use DF/DSS to backup volumes. It can be done for databases for
cold backups. We are also looking at FDR Upstream for a better
solution. Our Oracle via RMAN with our existing Netbackups is not
working so we know we have to move.
