Just to affirm that this is the (a?) proper direction, we have a set of
filesystems built on 3390 DASD that is just over 600 gigabytes. Originally,
it was built entirely with 3390 mod 3 disks, but is now on mod 27.

The other nice thing about LVM is that you can add a new disk, and mark an
old one as obsolete, and LVM will migrate the data off the old disk and on
to the new one. An entire filesystem can be migrated this way, without
taking down the system, or the applications running within it.
