Mark,

This is getting curiouser and curiouser.

I tried to ping the gateway, and I was receiving the Destination host
unreachable error, so I went hunting for a network guy.

I didn't think they turned off the switch port, as the ports are shared across
5 LPARs. The other 4 are working, and if they had disabled the port(s), well,
I would have known it a long time ago. However, they could have 'reclaimed'
the IP addresses, if they thought the IP addresses weren't being used. But
that didn't pan out either.

So then the network guy fired up one of his network tester/checker tools, and
said that the IP assigned to eth0 was there and answering. His port checker
said that ftp, telnet and ssh were all available. I explained the ping
problem, and, of course, he could ping the IP address with no problem.

So, back at my desk, I was able to connect via telnet and ssh, albeit very
slowly for the initial connection. And a ping in from my PC now works, too.

eth1 is still dead, but I can live with that for the moment. That's tomorrow's
task, after mkinitrd and zipl.

Puzzling...

I'll read up on mkinitrd tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the help,
Dave

Can you ping your default gateway from the Linux system? If not, check with
your network hardware folks. They may have turned off the switch port since
your end was inactive for so long (don't ask me how I know that might happen).
If you can ping the gateway, then see what a "traceroute -n" from the Linux
system to your PC shows you.
