I've seen the same thing happen a number of times with midrange systems.  If 
the system doesn't send any traffic through the switch for a while, the MAC 
address gets flushed out of the switch's cache.  It then takes a little bit for 
the switch to "re-learn" what MAC belongs to the IP address.  Usually not a 
long time, but noticeable.

I suspect it will wind up behaving the same way as eth0.
