It's ironic, isn't it, that the argument the AIX guy is using is the same
one we used against AIX and
Windows way back when....'Yes, they may be quicker for small things, but
they have no security, no RAS, no management tools, etc'. That's what makes
them quick and agile, not having all those cumbersome extras. Add all that
stuff in and you get a much more complex system to run. That's what z/OS was
when AIX was an infant, and what AIX is now that Linux is a toddler.
I suspect there are more developers looking at Linux than every looked
at AIX.
Linux is a very interesting social experiment, and I've very interested
to see how it stacks up over time compared with, say, Windows. How (FSF)
free software competes with patent-encumbered and otherwise secret software.

Hello!
Allow me to stick in my two credits.
AIX is fine. For simple server farms that run workloads that still haven't
been brought over to Linux. Or even to Solaris. But for truly massive
activities like banking, such as running an ATM service machine, Linux is
perfect. Oh and thank you Marcy for suggesting the opening paragraph for
this e-mail. I suspect that my bank does use Linux for doing something,
but
I'm not prepared to ask.
