I'm not sure what is common between your and David's systems. Here's what
works for me:

s390a13:~ # vmcp q cplevel
z/VM Version 5 Release 1.0, service level 0501 (64-bit)
Generated at 01/24/07 05:34:35 EST
IPL at 11/16/07 14:22:20 EST

s390a13:~ # SPident

CONCLUSION: System is up-to-date!
  found SLE-10-s390x-SP1 + "online updates"

s390a13:~ # rpm -q kernel-default
kernel-default-2.6.16.46-0.14

s390a13:~ # cat /proc/cpuinfo
vendor_id : IBM/S390
# processors : 2
bogomips per cpu: 1887.43
processor 0: version = FF, identification = 18732D, machine = 2094
processor 1: version = FF, identification = 18732D, machine = 2094
