The reason you may want to have the CP engines converted to IFL engines, is
that CP engines may be throttled to a certain capacity. The IFL engines always
run at full speed. It is just a microcode change along with the license
agreement.
However, there were some boxes that required you to have at least a single CP
engine, no IFL only boxes. In that case, it all depends on what your needs
are. If you can live with 2 LPARs, give one LPAR the CP engine and the other
LPAR all the IFL engines.
VM licensing is the same, no matter what.

All,
At work we may be able to get our hands on a z/990 and z/900
that already have regular CP's in them.
Just wanted to make sure that we can use those CP's, if we
dedicate these machines to z/VM and Linux.
I understand the point of using IFL's to not increase MSU
ratings if you're going to use a box that has z/OS software on it.
In this case we would keep the boxes as z/VM and Linux only
boxes.
(1) Is it possible to run z/VM and Linux on the regular CP's.
(2) If these boxes also have zAAP engines, can I use them for
java on Linux under z/VM, or are the zAAP engines only for z/OS.
Happy Holidays to all.
Thanks,
Oscar
