Easily, no, but it can be done.  The Dropline GNOME project does it, but it's 
clearly a lot of work if you want to go past just the util-linux package.

Yes, you can.  All you should need is the nss_ldap piece.

I'm not aware of anyone that's done this for Slack/390.  As I mentioned, 
Dropline does this for Slackware.  You can download their build system from 
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dropline-gnome/ which includes the scripts they 
use to compile the various packages.
