I would be interested in knowing the benefits of this over installing from
the tar files or sharing the binaries across multiple images?  Does this
"speed up" or make the installation easier?   Does this make it installable
on the root partition and why would one want to do that?

Just curious being a linu "newbie", but being more experienced with
WebSphere.
