Hi, Pieter....

I don't know how to check it either, but my understanding was that
the default had been "on" and was changed to "off" by the IBM

For SLES10SP1 we seem to be in the "on" state. At least Q MEMASSIST
tells me it is active.
From a presentation that Mark Post gave on the new features in SLES10SP1:
--------------------------------------------------------------
* Collaborative Memory Management Stage II.
Support for CMMA in z/VM APAR VM63856 and z/VM
5.3 reduces hypervisor paging I/O overhead. See
'Improved memory management for Linux guests' in
IBM U.S. Software Announcement Letter 207-019
"IBM z/VM V5.3 - Improving scalability, security, and
virtualization technology IBM".
The Linux support for CMM2 now has to be activated
via IPL option cmma=on (default is cmma=off).
– This is a change from the previous CMM2 add-on
patch which activated the support automatically
when the necessary prerequisites were available.
--------------------------------------------------------------
It seems that CMM-A can be activated/deactivated only at Linux IPL time.
My further understanding is that CMMA should not be used.
Why? What is broken?
Stick to CMM-1 instead. That I _can_ tell you something about,
having been playing with it recently.
For SAP CMM-1 doesn't really help. SAP basically works on a
grab-everything-there-is-and-don't-release-it strategy. I asked on
the list whether anybody had any experience or data on SAP and CMM-1,
but got no replies. Not few replies, but *none*. So I seem to be in
virgin territory there.
Yes, the pioneers are the folks with the arrows in their backs.....:-)
For now CMMA seems a lot easier to do (far less moving parts
involved), and I have all the requirements.
I also believe that you need to be running z/VM 5.3 with the needed
APARs on a either a z9BC or z9EC box.....CMM-A is not enabled on older z
boxes like the z990.
