I was trying to do this with a new guest by putting the following
directories in LVM (group "system" with one volume-204):

            /usr

            /var

            /opt

            /home

The rest of the root filesystem (including /boot) is on a regular
physical volume (200), and the swap disks are on two v-disks (201 and
202) and one physical disk (203). Everything looks fine in the
partitioner, but when I actually start the install and get to the
"preparing your hard disk" panel, I get:

      LVM Error

      lvcreate -A n -i 5 -l 64 -n usr -l 359 system

File descriptor 3 left open

I thought it might be the striping, but I get the same error (with
slightly different lvcreate parms) when I don't stripe. I can't figure
out what the problem is. I'm hoping it's obvious to you guys...

Also, I tried to set up the v-disks as FBA (using SWAPGEN) since I
thought that was required for SLES9-64bit, but wound up having to use
DIAG instead to get through Partitioner. If anyone knows how to make
FBA disks work for the initial install, let me in on the secret.

I was able to effectively install SLES9-sp4 before I tried the funky
stuff (vdisks and LVM), but we're trying to come up with a
best-practices installation model, leading to new and exciting errors
for the z/OS sysprog (me) to blindly stumble into. If the actual answer
to both of these problems is "you can't do that from here-get a good
bare-bones install and then modify the server accordingly", I'll
understand... Thanks!
