For what it's worth, this little tidbit made it's way around our
regional linux lug's mailing list a month or two ago:

~ scriptdir=$(cd $(dirname $0); pwd)
~ echo $scriptdir

It seems to work for all combinations of:

~ OS: solaris 10, redhat 4.6, Suse 10.1, AIX 5.3
~ Shell: #!/bin/bash, #!/bin/sh and #!/bin/ksh,
~ Invocation:a full path command, invoked by $PATH.

excepting Solaris and /bin/sh.

Luck!
