Doh. That was it. First time with zLinux, so when Disks were made available (for me to make /opt in a vg) I didn't realize that they needed to be added to zipl.conf. So when I rebooted, they never came up. So after eventually fixing this I completely forgot to copy gnome back from where I had moved it.

If you have been doing the same, mounting the new opt volume to another mount point, e.g. /opt2, and copying the whole /opt there, and then mounting it as /opt again, might solve the problem.
