I'll be a little more forceful than Neale was. Do not, under any circumstances, do this on a system that is maintained via RPM. You'll be laying landmines for yourself, or your successor, and your co-workers to step on at some point in the future. You might get away with it for some period of time, but it is definitely considered a bad practice. Use the package management tool that came with your distribution, whether that is RPM, APT, or whatever.
