Hello all,

I have been looking at our sysctl.conf parameters to ensure that they
are set properly.

Back in early SLES9 days I found a recommendation somewhere that said
that if you were running
SLES9 in an LPAR, you should set kernel.hz_timer=1. And for Linux under
z/VM, you should set
kernel.hz_timer=0.

After searching the mailing list archives, it appears that it is still
appropriate to set
kernel.hz_timer=0 for SLES10 Linux guests. However, I have not found
any recommendations for
setting kernel.hz_timer when you are running SLES10 in an LPAR.

Any advice or comments?

Why am I asking this?

Three of our Linux systems run in LPARS. Management wants a stripped
down portion of our
SAP system to continue running in the event that z/VM hiccups. (Which
it sometimes does in the
early stages of an ESP.) Having those three servers outside of z/VM
can make life simpler when
z/VM is having a bad day.

Thanks,
Ron Foster
Baldor
