Just to satisfy my curiousity. Can anybody relate the cost/performance of a z890 IFL vs. a z10BC IFL? Something along the lines of "A z10BC IFL is 3 times as powerful as a z890 IFL, while costing only half as much!". We had an IFL on our z890 (z9BC now). I keep trying to push z/Linux, despite the immense indifference to it even by my direct manager. In any case, the z890 IFL disappeared when we went to the z9BC, just to save on the maintenance cost. And it was regarded as "useless" because it couldn't run Windows! (some dip in IBM gave management the impression that Windows binaries could run on an IFL under z/Linux. Or some dip in our management made that conceptual leap and IBM marketting did not correct them.) We are a little better today. At least the "Windows uber alles!" managers are gone. And we do run RHEL on a number of Intel boxes. But I still cannot convince anybody to even consider consolidation of Linux/Intel onto z/Linux. They just don't want to bother. And, to be a bit honest, they like Intel because they can repurpose a server from Windows to Linux and vice versa. And they can run Windows and Linux on a single box under VMWare. And that is very difficult to argue against around here. -- Q: What do theoretical physicists drink beer from? A: Ein Stein. Maranatha!
