Sorry.  A bit of googling reveals my error -- SMAPI is a separate
facility which uses dirmaint.  I was confusing the two.  Presumably
then, SMAPI can be called from non-VM systems via a socket interface or
some such.

/me goes off to read the "Systems Management Application Programming"
manual google just found for him...
