If you are interested, I ported QEMU on Debian s390. The problem with QEMU is that it does not compile with gcc 4.x compiler. It uses gcc 3.4.6. I am running it under z/VM 5.3 on a z/990. I used a Standard Windows 2003 server. The installation run about 8 hours but finally it worked. The performance is not that bad but I am not sure if it would really be acceptable for production workload. Probably the performance would be better on more modern machines like z/10.
