Subject: Re: Oracle DB's and Why??

We are running Oracle 10g R2 on our z/890 with an IFL.

The reason....pure and simple...cost.

I'm currently running 6 Oracle images (i.e. 6 Linux guests, SUSE 10 SP2) on the
IFL. Cost of Oracle license, $44,000 (single engine). To run these 6 images,
each on their own server, 6 * $44,000 for Oracle licenses (single engine on
each server).

These are not real heavy hitters, Oracle images seems to be taking about 10% of
the IFL. Each of the images takes 600 MB virtual, with a few vdisks for
paging. The Oracle SGA was also trimmed down greatly. I let the ficon
attached DS6800 handle the I/O load. When I'm shown that response time becomes
a problem, I will then up the Oracle SGA, and the Linux guest size for more
cache hits, but until then....

We do have 4 Oracle licenses for WINTEL. The few people that access Oracle on
both platforms can't tell, from a performance perspective, that they are on the
mainframe.

With the success, management has made a goal, not to buy/install any databases
on any other platform other than the mainframe. (I doubt that we will have
100% compliance.) We have changed requirements that specified SQL/SERVER to
Oracle, with pretty good luck. Some also go to DB2/VSE and eventually DB2/UDB
(on the mainframe).

Other considerations:

1. Security.
2. Virus concerns.
3. Backup.
4. Disaster recovery.
5. Ability to serve the data to any authorized dept/agency/division.
6. Reduction of replacement of current database servers.

There were 9 items. I can't think of the other 3. Must be getting beer time
<G>.

Hello List,

If you are running Oracle Databases on zLinux, can you tell me why that
choice was made?? Were the AIX or Wintel
platforms considered??

Thanks,

Chris
