You're assuming that the installer uses that information to set the MAC 
address.  I don't know that to be true.

The installer doesn't prompt for any information on any platform other than 
System z until after the initial installation is done and the system rebooted 
for phase 2.  They don't have to prompt until then because they have direct 
access to the installation media.  For those cases where you want to do a 
network install, they either depend on PXE booting (boy wouldn't it be nice to 
have that working on System z), or the isolinux program prompts for whether you 
want to use dhcp, or a static address.  In both cases, you need to tell it 
which interface you want to use.  So, in essence, yes.  In the ase of System z, 
no interfaces are activated until you tell it which one you want.  If you don't 
like the way that's done, I know IBM has access to our feature request system 
FATE.  :)

Because that code was written specifically to support the mainframe and only 
the mainframe, so they used parameter names that reflected that.  Go bang on 
their door in the middle of the night to complain.  :)
