You can only do the initial boot from the HMC. All the rest of the code installation has to be done from a remote workstation. The error -1 is likely to be either a bad exports file or no name resolution.
Wrt to getting VM, talk to your IBM rep. It is very easy to get z/VM as a trial system for a period of time for zero money, and you'll have a lot more success getting things to work. > Ps.
