Hi, Mike.
Yes, EDEVs could be employed in th same fashion as 3390 (ECKD)
devices....one Linux guest has a MDISK for the shared minidisk and all
other Linux guests have a r/o link to it.

The real problem is that z/VM does not virtualize FCP-attached disk like
it can do for ECKD and FBA devices....the WWPN and LUN values are "real"
ones, and can not be shared across virtual machines. You need some extra
software running on some Linux systems (either Linux on the z or Linux
on another platform) to support some sort of clustered file system
(e.g., AFS, GPFS, etc.).

Now for some more queries:

1) is IBM's GPFS available for zLinux?
2) is anyone doing any significant file system sharing across
FCP-attached disk on z/VM? if so, what are you're experiences, good ,
bad, otherwise?

Thanks and a tip of the hat to Dr. Boyes for explaining this stuff to me.

Have a good one.

What about EDEVs? Doesn't then an EDEV just look like any other disk with
a 4 digit vaddr, except that it's FBA not ECKD?
