It¹s used with OpenVPN to do transparent layer 2 bridging. Most
people use
OpenVPN at layer 3 with routed networking.
With OpenVPN you can get bridged layer 2 between the OpenVPN endpoints
just by using the tap device rather than tun. Only if you need to
bridge to machines not in the OpenVPN star (server + multiple clients)
should you need to get fancy about it.
