Dear Mark,

As the other colleagues have stated, bridge-utils are used for layer 2
bridging but not only for OpenVPN. (See
http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/miscellaneous/76-ethernet-bridging.html).
I wanted to use it also for some test with QEMU but couldn't find it at that
time as well. It consists of some parts such as the brctl command.

Here an excerpt from the OpenVPN HowTo:

First, make sure you have the *bridge-utils* package installed.

Edit the bridge-start <http://openvpn.net/bridge.html#linuxscript> script
below. Set the *br*, *tap*, *eth*, *eth_ip*, *eth_netmask*, and *
eth_broadcast* parameters according to the physical ethernet interface you
would like to bridge. Make sure to use an interface which is private and
which is connected to a LAN which is protected from the internet by a
firewall. You can use the Linux *ifconfig* command to get the necessary
information about your network interfaces to fill in the
*bridge-start*parameters.

Now run the *bridge-start* script. It will create a persistent
*tap0*interface and bridge it with the active ethernet interface.

Here is also some entry from Novell support forum for someone who had
problems with it:

http://forums.novell.com/novell-product-support-forums/suse-linux-enterprise-server-sles/sles-networking/357274-bridge-utiles-crashing-sles-10-sp2.html

I need a way to avoid defining the OpenVPN network as route on all my
machines as the OpenVPN Host is not on the default gateway in my network. I
am not sure if I could masquerading on the OpenVPN instead. Maybe someone
has a good idea for that.

Thanks
Florian
