Tom, To be safe, you want to do this while Samba is not running. When I upgrade the disks on my Samba server, I use rsync to copy the contents of the existing drive to the new drive using the -av and --delete options. You can do this during the day when the server is being used. Then just before you do the switch, shutdown Samba and any other application that may have files open in the file system or directory you are moving. Then run another rsync -av --delete which should bring the new disk in sync with the old and should take a very short time. Swap the disks and restart your server.
