Not sure if it will help in this case but since a lot of newer
distributions make use of virtual file systems such as devfs, sysfs,
procfs, etc. I find it useful to bind the virtual file systems to the
chroot'ed environments. For example:
# mount --bind /dev /sles11root/dev
# mount --bind /sys /sles11root/sys
# mount --bind /proc /sles11root/proc
# chroot /sles11root
