I was working at a University data center when this happened. My boss was fuming over it. Within a few years after this, the computer science curriculum started to migrate away from a mainframe emphasis. Partly because of the death of HESC and partly because the industry was changing. The University drastically cut back on processor size because of the group/tier costs. When the mainframe got slower, the students complained because of turn around time and thus the faculty and the college moved away from the mainframe curriculum. As many have already mentioned on this list, I still don't understand why IBM did this. Long term it has hurt a lot of companies because of lack of skill set. Short term, yeah, the books looked good for a few years. It always boils down to money. In fairness, the education discounts were still there but they weren't as sweet as they had been.
