If all you require is the ability to run the RedHat GUI tools for
configuring the network and what not, you can use basic ssh X11
forwarding instead of a full GNOME desktop through VNC. This will be
more comfortable to use under Herc as well as on a real LPAR when you
get there later.

If you've got sshd already running, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config to
enable X11_Forwarding and restart sshd. Then from your local
workstation ssh in with the -X flag. If echo $DISPLAY points to
localhost:10.0 or something similar then you should be all set. xeyes
or xclock will show if the X11 tunnel is working correctly.

Of course, if your workstation is running Windows you'll have to have
an X server running there, Cygwin is what I use.
