I think the Novell url had a limited lifespan: Before I posted it I tried it in
a different browser to verify it'd work and it did then but not now.
Here's alternate way to display those urls:
go to
http://download.novell.com/patch/finder/#familyId=7261&priority=&productId=19925&distribution=&architecture=12214&keywords=mkinitrd&xp=19925&xy=19925_2009
 and click  "26 Aug 2009 - mkinitrd s390x"
or,
 do this:

http://download.novell.com/patch/finder/
fill out the form with
Product= SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
version = SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2
architecture=s390x
Keyword = mkinitrd
click ->Search
in the results labeled SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2, click 2009, expands
to list various mkinitrd patches,
click "26 Aug 2009 - mkinitrd s390x" to display details of patch "mkinitrd
20090807" for
sles10 sp2 mkinitrd-1.2-106.86.3, further down in its Problem description
section it says
The following bugs have been fixed: Use correct multipath bindings file
(bnc#500785)

----- and
Google "Bug 409741", the top result (today anyway) is for "Bug 409741 –
device-mapper not utilizing friendly names" My earlier post was Google's url
for that result which describes a multipath bindings file issue. url works
today, but hopefully the mkinitrd fixes the problem and you don't need
workarounds.

I tried both links, but did not get any hits on them

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3D409741

Bug #3D409741 does not exist.
