Well, not always - our team had some second-level z/VMs with third-level
Linuxes on a z990 - the performance went from acceptable to *bad* (but
perhaps not *excruciatingly  bad*). If the application did not have a lot
of I/O, it was acceptable. When it did have a lot of I/O, (not that I'm a
performance expert), apparently, it would drop in and out of SIE a lot,
and the performance was, yes, bad.

We now have some resource on a z10 and we plan to set up at least one
second level z/VM, and some third level Linuxes. We're  hoping for better
performance on the z10 (relative to the z990) ...
