I hadn't put two-and-two together after I noticed that wireshark came
out of ethereal, but it doesn't seem to solve my problem anyhow. I
pulled down the ethereal package on a separate zlinux guest (so I didn't
have to worry about interference with whatever I'd screwed up on the
wireshark install/deinstall) and started it up, only to find it seems to
have the same limitation. This leads me to believe I just can't use the
filter on ip address (net/mask) when running a trace of the eth0
interface, or maybe that it expects the filter in a different format.
Do you happen to know how to translate the capture-filter (from gui,
because if I can't figure it out there, it's even more unlikely I could
use the command interface!):
"net 10.x.y.0 mask 255.255.255.0"
To something that would work with the eth0 interface? That works great
filtering the "any" data, but nets me nothing with eth0...

The package ethereal on SLES10 is the equivalent of wireshark. It is
available for SLES10 SP2 on System z. But, you don't really need the
GUI that comes with it. You could just use the tcpdump or tcpdump-qeth
command to capture the raw data.
