And justifiably so. These lines are frequently drawn based upon business considerations, not technical ones. Linux being open source allows a distributor the option of drawing a different set of lines and adjusting the distribution accordingly. Such adjustments would allow older hardware systems to run supported modern distribution levels. The enterprise using Linux also has the right to make such adjustments, but that usually negates support agreements with distributors and why most enterprises will not make them. To date, no distributor has seen sufficient business drivers to draw different lines than the ones drawn by IBM. To do so, though, could prove to be a business opportunity for one who is willing to do that.
